Never Delete Old Posts

May 16, 2017 By Kristina McInerny Leave a Comment

Why? Because it all goes towards your digital footprint.  I’ve been blogging since 2009-ish (https://notesfromkris.wordpress.com).  It all started when I was working at a web development company in technical support and then it morphed into documenting my Project Management Certification notes (6 loooong classes).  Then I started my own web dev company.  I kept accumulating knowledge and wanted an easy way for me and my clients to access it all; sort of a knowledgebase. Skip to the last paragraph for the executive summary, or just read on.

So the real question is: What’s Your Goal?

Businesses that Sell a Product/Service: Focus on your business offerings in a concise manner in an easy to navigate website.  Don’t ramble like I do.  Easy to read, easy to buy.  Period.

Technical Minute: if you DO decide to delete content, a 410 header will indicate to Google that it was intentionally removed rather than a default 404 error.  Decide if you want to create a 301 redirect from the old URL to another relevant URL and be sure that that page isn’t linked to from other places.  There are plugins for that.

Life Bloggers: Personally, I never delete mine;  I want others to know I’m the real deal and not any different online than offline.  I exported the Notes From Kris content into this current site because no one understood the ‘notes’ part.  I also created a book from my NFK site for posterity before I removed it.  Websites by Kris is an amalgamation of everything I’ve done in my life.

If I were to create a site that is one topic, with one business focus, I would create a new site and either pay for Google AdWords (or FB Ads for B2C) to get found quicker or do the “slow burn” and create consistently relevant content and correlate it to a Facebook page as I did for my side business of teaching people with insulin resistance how I removed drugs from my lifestyle with food and exercise (it’s not rocket science, but it is different than “common knowledge”).  www.HealthyDiabetesManagement.com and on Facebook as HealthyDiabetesTips – Focus & Relevance
